Sponsor Letter Dear Sir/Madam: My son, Dylan Egan Kolar, is a spirited 5 yr old living in Sayville, NY. He was diagnosed with Shwachman Diamond Syndrome at the age of one. Shwachman Diamond Syndrome is a rare bone marrow failure syndrome and is the 2nd most common cause of pancreatic insufficiency, second only to Cystic Fibrosis. He is currently doing very well under the guidance and care of the wonderful doctors and staff at Schneider Children’s Hospital. But, more research is needed to help Dylan and all the other children who are struggling with this very rare syndrome. We are optimistic but also realistic and are taking the necessary steps to insure a healthy future for Dylan. We have had more good days than bad. However, we could not just sit back and let this disease control the future of our family. We wanted to do something to spark awareness of the need to fund research. Shwachman Diamond Project, Ltd. is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 2005, to fund research into Shwachman Diamond Syndrome as well as other Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes and Pancreatic Insufficiency Conditions. Thanks in large part to this research, the gene for this disease has recently been isolated. This discovery has resulted in many positive steps towards future treatment and even a possible cure for this potentially fatal syndrome. Last June, the 2nd Annual 5K Shwachman Diamond Dash-“Dash for a Cure” was held in Sayville, NY. Thanks to the many corporate sponsors and others who gave so generously, over $40,000 was raised for research. The monies supported a very important bone marrow failure research project. The goal set by the Dash for a Cure road race committee is $50,000. This will enable the Shwachman Diamond Project, Ltd. to extensively fund more research projects. The 3rd annual 5k Run/Walk, and a 1 K Fun Run will be held on Saturday June 17, 2006 at Sunrise Drive Elementary School in Sayville, NY.
